Walsall 0-0 Bradford City

Sometimes you`ll get a game that, despite being 0-0, still manages to be jam packed with excitement and end to end action. This however wasn`t one of them.

Anyone who hadn`t seen the Saddlers play since the end of last season could be forgiven for thinking they were still watching the same team. Lots of pretty possession and excellent passing and moving, but absolutely nothing in the way of an end product. The fact it took until the 91st minute for the Bantams keeper to be forced into a save, stopping smartly from an Adam Chambers shot, speaks volumes. At least we have the prospect of another striker to look forward too.

Except I`m not sure that`s the problem. Tom Bradshaw and Ashley Grimes have shown in the opening couple of games that they are both very good players, but the impotency from last season remains. Personally I think the problem stems from the fluidity within the attacking quartet, in that they move around so much, that there`s never actually anyone standing up front. I`m not convinced another striker, played the same way in the same system, is really going to fix that.

One huge positive to come out of today was the impressive debut of 18 year old Liam Kinsella, who slotted in at right back in place of the injured James O`Connor as though he`d played there for the last 100 games. A young man with a very bright future in the game. Let`s hope he doesn`t fall into the trap of so many others of leaving to join Sheffield United only to find it causes their career to hit the buffers.

Which brings me on to Andy Butler. The former Saddlers captain was in attendance today following a training ground bust up with Nigel Clough/picking up an injury/failing to impress in pre-season (delete as appropriate). Perhaps travelling all the way down to Northampton to watch his own team was too long a commute from his Doncaster home? Either way, the news had sent rumours circulating that he may end up back at Bescot on a short term loan. Given that his replacement, James Chambers, went off injured in the second half he would certainly be welcomed back by the Saddlers faithful. I suggest watching this space for news on that one.

Back to the game, and the positives aside from Kinsella, was a clean sheet for a Butler-less defence, and continuing our unbeaten start to the season. But as ever, draws are only good if they`re backed up by wins. Win on Tuesday against Yeovil and this is an impressive start to the season, lose and we`re on two points from three games and things look a little less rosy.

Let`s just sit back and wait and see what happens.
