Now don't get me wrong a fully fit all guns blazing Darren Byfield would have been a useful addition to the Walsall team possible the missing link for a higher league placing. However I am not going to shed any tears over the fact he is going to the Championship, in fact good luck to him.
So why won't I be shedding any tears, well it's not the first time he has been on the verge of joining us only to be lured away by the smell of the money is it. Perhaps he feels Bristol is a reasonable comute from Birmingham, but it isn't the midlands move he is supposed to have wanted. There is a rumour that Millwall didn't want to sell him to a club in the same division, if thats true you can't blame them really. So would we have got a fully committed player to the Saddlers cause I think not, and his previous track record and the way he dealt with his Millwall exit proves it in my book.
So with the reported bust up with his wife also in the background would he be fully focussed on whats happening on the pitch. I don't know but it's a valid question.
So has he gone for first team football, well I maybe proved wrong but the facts are Bristol City have already got last seasons top scorer Phil Jeavons, they have paid out for Lee Trundle and Sproule from Hibs and winger Murray also has played down the centre for the Robbins. So a first team place isn't guarenteed by any means.
Perhaps Bristol City were the only ones willing to pay the fee Millwall wanted I know Walsall were not willing to pay over the valuation they put on Byfield, we don't usually do transfer fees anyway.
So lets let it go, he has only signed a one year contract so wait for the rumours to re appear next summer.....perhaps he really does want to come to Walsall, and he will be free next June!!
