There has been a lot of speculation about players this week, as well as drama in the turning away of certain talents - I refer to Jack Lester and Spencer Weir-Daley. I can understand DD`s decision to not opt for the former Grimsby striker`s services, but as for Weir-Daley - what is he doing? I am proud of the way DD has conducted himself in the transfer market since he took the job over a year ago, but why has he bypassed the chance to sign a pacey front man who scored two brilliant goals against us for Lincoln last season? Why is he not worth a gamble? The budget at the Banks`s must be tight if we can`t. I know DD explained in Monday`s Express and Star that Weir-Daley did want to join the club, but he didn`t think that he was stronger mentally or technically any better than Alex Nicholls and Troy Deeney. I hope he is right, because you know he will sign for another club and score a hat-trick against us.
When I last saw Darren Byfield in a Walsall shirt, he was unhappy and went to Rotherham in the first January transfer window. However, at the time, I was very disappointed with this because I always thought he had the potential to be an excellent Walsall striker, one that could take to places we had never been before. He proved me right by signing for Sunderland and doing well for them, before finding himself back in the lower leagues, including a spell of preseason training with the Walsall squad under Paul Merson, where he rejected a move back to the Midlands in favour for a move to then Championship side Gillingham. Byfield, who scored the winner in that Play-Off final that every Saddlers fan will remember, has since winded up at Millwall, scoring 16 goals last season in League One. Good job that Walsall have put in a bid for him, which has led to some Millwall fans wetting themselves. They seem to think that he would stay in London because the Lions have more of a chance at promotion next season, and they may have a point. However, Walsall are no small club any more - we do mean business.
P.S. Good luck to Mark Wright, as he signed for MK Dons yesterday and I hope that he is successful back in League Two.
