Saddlers Legends

Our run to the FA Cup fifth round in 1975 is almost certainly what many people think of when they think of Walsall and its easy to remember the role played by certain players during that time.

The safe hands of Mick Kearns between the sticks and the genuine genius of Alan Buckley at the other end both had a big influence on that run.

But striker George Andrews could also claim to have had a big part to play. It was he who was tripped to earn the penalty that won the third round tie against Man Utd and then in the fourth round an awesome strike from Andrews saw us past Newcastle.

A sort of Eric Cantona/ Rolf Harris in his looks, Andrews played up front for Walsall over 175 times in four years between 1973 and 1977 and during that time found the net 40 times.

Ironically it was for his power and presence in the air that Andrews was best known to Saddlers fans and so it was no surprise that his crucial goal against Newcastle was a bullet header from a perfect Bernie Wright cross.

After leaving Walsall in 1977, Andrews career faltered slightly and he joined non-league Worcester City.

He still lives in the Midlands and currently works for the council on the parks and gardens around the Tipton area.
