Before you all panic it is only a rumour, but a strong one I must admit.
The rumour doing the rounds goes a bit like this. Our wage cost next year is going to be much higher than last year, not rocket science that bit. This is of course has been budgeted for. Also in the budget will be a bit extra for team building. However DD is under the impression that we require a bit more than just a little bit of tinkering if we are to be competive. I don't think there is anything so far we wouldn't agree with. So to enable this to happen we will be cutting the dead wood out of the squad, a harsh fact of football.
However for the major rebuilding and the new striker DD wants, extra funds are required. So we hope to raise so money from the transfer market. Of those players who are still under contract many would not raise a great deal. That leaves Scott Dann who has been subject of numerous scouting reports from Championship and top flight clubs. It is felt that the sale of Dann would still leave Roper, Gerrard and Picken and Westwood and of course Mannie Smith in the squad. However we could get 300k plus sell on clauses which would allow us to strengthen in more than one area.
Of course such speculation is always rife at this time of year, but the facts seem to add up to a grain of truth. So if it does end up being the way forward for the playing side, then the last we will see of Scott Dann is when he picks up the young player of the season award, which I am sure he will. It is all a long way from nearly been thrown out of the club by Paul Merson.
