Whitney: Oldham hopefully a turning point

Jon Whitney got the reaction he wanted from his Saddlers side following a tepid first half against Oldham as his side ran out 2-1 winners.

And, following the impressive comeback, Jon Whitney feels his side will have learnt some valuable lessons from the 90 minutes.

Speaking to the Express & Star Whitney said: 'It's hopefully a really important turning point for our new squad.

'They have to realise that when we play at a slow pace and when we`re predictable, that isn`t us. We have to play at a high tempo.

"It`s only the second game of the season. But I think the manner of the performance was pleasing as well.

'We had them on the ropes the whole of the second half.'

Whitney will be hoping that his troops are firing for the trip to Portsmouth on Saturday in what will be one of the more difficult away trips this season. Fratton Park is sold out to home supporters with a raucous atmosphere expected, the Saddlers didn't fare too well last season at the bigger grounds - Sheffield United apart obviously - and the 'character, passion and belief' that Whitney has tried to instil will have to come to the fore...

An impressive result, this campaign is going to be a tough one,a season whereby a mid table thing wouldn't be a bad thing, two draws have followed on from this win, three games unbeaten,if the club are to have any chance at a shot of the play off's then some draws will need to be turned into wins. With the points system we have now adopted since 1981 ( many won't remember the old system ) the game has been adapted to make it more entertaining than it was hence the change was made to 3 points for a win rather than two.Now days a draw is not so much of a good thing where once it was,it can be seen as two points dropped for every draw.A series of wins and losses far outweighs the benefits of going unbeaten,we commonly see teas achieve promotion with a high volume of losses providing they have few draws and win as many as they loose.Walsall have a chance of the play offs however they must eliminate too many draws.
