Whitney full of praise for Makris

Whitney full of praise for Makris

It's been a long wait. A lot of Saddlers may have thought it was never going to happen, but Saturday 8 April 2017 was the date that Andreas Makris finally scored his first goal for the Saddlers.

Makris had impressed in the previous two games, against Southend and Bradford, and was handed a first home start since November 2016 against Oxford United.

Saddlers boss Jon Whitney has revealed the thinking behind giving Makris this run of starts.

Speaking to the Official Walsall FC website Whitney, said: "It was important he had a run of games.I knew he was ready a couple of weeks ago. I could sense it in him when he came back from the international break.

"He was unlucky last week at Bradford and he worked really hard before his goal.'

The goal itself was a fantastically taken left-footed half volley which sailed past visiting 'keeper Simon Eastwood into the top corner just after half-time. I'm sure Makris would have taken a two-yard tap in, but the quality of the strike must have pleased him even more.

The Saddlers travel to local rivals Shrewsbury Town on Good Friday and Makris will be looking to add to his goalscoring exploits at the weekend.
