Walsall's attack miss firing

We have scored 29 goals this season in the league (we have let in 8) which isn't a bad return. However at the start of the season most saddler suspected that the goals required to mount a promotion push would come from the strikers and at the start of the season that conclusion was dead right.

Martin Butler scored seven in ten starts, the fact is he has gone six games with out a goal. Hector Sams three goals in seventeen games doesn't make up for the shortfall, although some would argue that he is more of a foil to provide goals rather than a 20 goals per season man.

So what does this tell us?, well once again it depends if your a glass is half or half empty type of person. The fact we have moved top of the table during this time is evidence of a good 'team' not just reliant on an individual or two, and without doubt the goals will stat to flow again, sometime. However once again it does also show our lack of a third choice striker (or perhaps second choice) who can come in or step off the bench to change a game and put the ball in the net.

So what of the future?. Well we have the 75k that will come thanks to SKY next monday. Walsall never budget for cash from cup runs. So it is hoped this will go into the coffers to iad squad strenghtening. However 20 goal a season strikers don't grow on trees, so we will either have to unearth an unknown talent...risky bussiness that (an aussie or swede perhaps or are we calling Paul Taylor?), or we look to older players who would do a job in league two but are struggling at a higher level. Hence the rumors and approachs to the likes of Carl Asaba and Micheal Ricketts.

Only time will tell, but how we deal with this problem will have a direct bearing on our final league position.

Not a problem at the moment, top of the pile with this problem says a lot for the team, but it needs to be resolved before the goals from midfield and defence dry up.
