Bert Williams Passes Away

Bert Williams Passes Away

Former Walsall, Wolves and England legend Bert Williams today passed away at the age of 93.

'The Cat' was born in Bilston on 31st January 1920. Bert joined Walsall in 1937. During 8 years with the club during the World War, Williams made just 25 appearances for the Saddlers before joining Wolves in 1945.

It was at Wolves that Bert is highly recognised where he won the League Championship and FA Cup but he will always be fondly remembered by the Saddlers faithful.

Williams won his first full cap for England against France in May, 1949 and his performance against Italy will always be remembered as the the Italian newspapers nicknamed him 'Il Gatone' (The Cat). Williams was in the England side that famously lost to USA in the 1950 World Cup Finals.

In total he made 24 appearances for England.

In 2002, Bert lost his wife to Alzheimer's and raised over £150,000 for the charity. For his charity work and his footballing career, Bert was given a MBE by the Queen.

Bert was given honorary presidency of The Walsall Supporters Trust former players Association.

Everyone at Vital Walsall sends our deepest condolences to his family.

Rest In Peace Bert xxx
