Saddlers Gone Global - Montreal

From our Twitter account we have made friends with Saddlers from across the world. Over the next few months we shall be finding out all about our Global Saddlers.

If you want to get involved contact Vital Walsall via twitter using #saddlersgoneglobal

Name: Jason Broadhurst

Age: 38 and a half

Current Location:
I moved to Montreal, Canada on a 2-year contract... 13 years ago. Got here via Bloxwich, Derby and Sheffield.

Occupation Overseas:
Marketing Consultant

When did you start following WFC:
1983/84 I think. What a season to start - I thought it was always going to be like that! I can't remember the actual game, but I can remember we played against someone wearing blue.

What made you choose WFC:
I remember a few older kids who lived on our street used to go. So one day I just walked in the house and told my dad I wanted to go and see Walsall play. I'd never shown any real interest in football before that.

If/When was your last match:
For years I organised my Christmas trips back to the motherland to take in the most games I could. The last one I saw was WFC 0, Notts County 1, 31 Jan 2012. I went with my nephew who still lives in Bloxwich. It's an often overused assessment, but I firmly believe it was the most abject performance I'd ever seen from a Walsall team. I think it was also Chris Hutchings' last game in charge.

Best memory:
Walsall 4, Bristol CIty 0, play-off final 1988. Kenny Mower's in-laws lived opposite us and he got complimentary tickets to the seats for my Dad and me (only ever sat in Fellows Park seats twice - the other time courtesy of Mr. Mower too). David Kelly opened champagne right next to me and I got a bit wet.

Have you influenced anyone to follow the Saddlers whilst overseas:
My 4-year old son sings Saddlers, Saddlers, Saddlers! when we listen to the games on Saddlers Player. And whenever he sees the badge he screams 'DADA! SADDLERS!'. That's about it though. I find there's apathy towards the Saddlers in Montreal... similar to Walsall in that way.

What do you expect for the new season:
I think there are some big clubs and some good teams this time around. I think it's going to be a stronger division than the season gone, and we've lost a lot of attacking clout with Brandy, Grigg and Pato going. It's going to be tougher than last year, and I see us somewhere around mid-table.

Your all time Walsall X1:
This is difficult, but I'm going 4-4-2:

Keeper: Jimmy Walker
Right back: Brian Caswell
Left back: Zigor Aranalde
Centre backs: Peter Hart, Adi Viveash
Right Mid: Mark Rees
Left Mid: Jeff Peron
Centre Mids: Martyn O'Connor (Captain), Craig Shakespeare
Forwards: Andy Rammell, David Kelly

Subs (how many can I have?): Fred Barber, Scott Dann, David Preece, Pedro Matias, Stuart Rimmer... oh, and Jorge Leitao

Thats my boy!
Jason's son proudly wearing the 85/86 shirt!

Vital Walsall would like to thank Jason for a wonderful insight into his life away from these shores. We hope to see him back at The Banks's soon.
