Match Report: Portsmouth 1 Walsall 2

The Saddlers extended the impressive opening to the season this weekend, with a 2-1 away victory over Portsmouth.

A game which a lot of fans would have been satisfied with a point, began with both teams looking very up for it, both defences being put to the test early on.

Pushing and prodding at each other defences, and a penalty shout turned down for Portsmouth pretty much wrapped up a less than thrilling first half.

Halftime Portsmouth 0 - Walsall 0

Pompey began the second half as the brighter of the two sides, McLeod forcing a save from Grof before Andy Taylor was forced to clear and effort of the goal line.

On the 55th minute, Walsall were in the lead, some good running down the left by Ashley Hemmings, who teed up James Baxendale for a
Stunning strike high into the Portsmouth net.

Walsall held possession again, and just ten minutes later, the lead was doubled through a 25 yard strike from Florent Cuvelier which flew through the crowd and eventually past the 'keeper.

In the 70th minute some scrappy defending saw one time Saddlers target Izale McLeod give Porstmouth hope with a curling effort to make it 2-1.

Portsmouth pushed hard for an equaliser, although Walsall were unlucky not to extend the lead from a long range Jamie Paterson effort that rattled the crossbar.

Full Time: Portsmouth 1 - Walsall 2
                (McLeod 69').   ( Baxendale 56', Cuvelier 63')

Attendance: 11, 767 (321 Walsall fans)

A fantastic, albeit unexpected away victory for the Saddlers, which serves to extend our brilliant start to the season, which sees Walsall sitting in the lofty heights of fifth.
