Match Report: Notts County 0 Walsall 1

Walsall's second away trip on the bounce saw us heading to Meadow Lane on an extremely wet Saturday afternoon, with expectations largely as damp as the weather.

Most Walsall fans found themselves going for/classing a draw as a top result against the fellow Midlands side.

The plucky Saddlers hadn't read the script.

Walsall began in their usual slow fashion, finding it difficult to get anything on the ball and having to fight to get into the game.

In fact the majority of the first half consisted of County being in control with the Saddlers happy to sit back and defend, just a couple of half glimpses of quality from the Saddlers but no real threat at hand.

Walsall began the second half a lot brighter, holding possession well, albeit still without having tested out the Magpie's goalkeeper.

Florent Cuvelier finally hit a shot on target with a tame effort into the 'keeper's hands, before 78 minutes in, the travelling crowd were sent into raptures as Walsall took the lead.

A Purkiss free kick was swung in, Butler touched ball past the oncoming 'keeper, and George Bowerman cheekily tried to snatch the goal on the line.

Andy Butler and Lee Hughes were then booked for 'handbags' as Notts County pushed for an equalising goal, which simply wasn't to be as the Saddlers defended confidently.

Full Time: Notts County 1 - Walsall 0

A great result made even sweeter by the fact that it was away, surely we are all relieved that we have our first three points on the board.
