Match Report: Oldham 1 - Walsall 1

The new season is starting to get into the swing of things, and the midweek games have begun once again.

Walsall last night headed to Boundary Park for their first away skirmish of the season with Oldham Athletic, never an easy fixture.

Oldham set out to make things difficult from the start, as they battled hard for possession and created some early half chances, which led to a booking for a tackle from behind for Saddlers centre back Dean Holden.

The game became somewhat of a midfield battle as Grigg, playing as a lone striker again, struggled to take a foothold in the game.

In the 36th minute, the home side were ahead through Yousouff M'Changama, who hit a long range effort which Grof got a hand to but the ball inexplicably went in off the goalkeeper's head.

Oldham grew in confidence and Walsall were only allowed one mOre half chance through Paterson before half time, which came to nothing.

Half Time: Oldham Athletic 1 - Walsall 0

Oldham again began the second half quite confidently, stretching the Walsall defence at times, but Walsall did begin to fight back, firstly through a corner which Latics goalkeeper Cisak looked shaky with and then Grigg forcing a good save.

On the eighty minute mark, the 169 travelling fans were sent into overdrive as Walsall drew level.

A poor back pass from an Oldham centre back was anticipated by youngster George Bowerman who was left one on one with Cisak and he duly converted.

The game went into overdrive and became very end to end as both teams hunted for a winner, Paterson proving unlucky not to grab it at the end.

Full Time: Oldham Athletic 1 (M'Changama 36') Walsall 1(Bowerman 79')

Attendance: 3,496 (169 Walsall fans)

A good result, a ground that can be very difficult to come away with anything at times, and a much improved second half performance gives some positives to carry into Botts County in Saturday.
