The Saddlers headed in to the penultimate home game of the season this weekend knowing that victory would all but ensure safety.
Tranmere however, had other ideas and duly delivered a sizeable blow to Walsall's survival claim.
Walsall began the game well, an early effort flying over, before Ledesma put Kevan Hurst through on goal who screwed his effort just wide.
Ledesma then placed a free kick dangerously into Tranmere's area but saw it cleared as Walsall fought to claim an early goal.
Tranmere's only real threat of the first half came on the half hour mark when Beevers went into the referee's book for a foul out wide, the resulting free kick was looped into the box, and went all the way through and crashed off Walsall's far post.
Half time: Walsall 0 Tranmere 0
Walsall again began the second half brightly, Ledesma as always being heavily involved seeing an effort dip just over, before he had a shot well saved by opposition 'keeper Fon Williams.
On the hour mark Andy Butler found himself booked for a foul on Andy Robinson, on the edge of the area, which Robinson himself fired home to give Tranmere the lead.
Walsall got straight back into the action, Ledesma having an effort from inside the area blocked, Jon Macken catching the rebound but seeing it well blocked again.
Ledesma and Mantom linked well, but the on loan Albion man fired well over, before Walsall's first change of the match as Jamie Paterson replaced Kevan Hurst, just before George Bowerman came on in place of Alex Nicholls.
A couple of half chances coming towards to end as Walsall pushed for an equaliser but Tranmere dealing with everything, before three minutes into stoppage time, Adam Mcgurk had a shot tipped round the post by Grof, but Lee Beevers was pulled back for a foul in the build up and received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
A very dissapointing day all round for the Saddlers, some poor refereeing decisions couple with simple inability to convert chances, means Exeter away next week is all the more important now!
Final Score: Walsall 0
Tranmere 1
Robinson 61'
Attendance: 3,895
