RIP Tony Richards

RIP Tony Richards

Walsall's second highest ever scorer Tony Richards has died aged 76.

Richards was and still is a Saddlers icon, scoring a total of 185 goals in 334 appearances.

He started his career at Walsall in 1954, after he had served in the army in Egypt. After pleading with then manager Frank Buckley, he was handed a trial, a move that kick started one of the best periods in the club's history.

Richards went on to help the Saddlers win the old Division Three title in 1960.

After suffering a leg injury in 1963, Richards moved onto Port Vale and failed to re-capture the form he showed in a Saddlers shirt.

Recently, he had become a Honary Life President of the club to mark his cult status at Walsall.

Tony will be sadly missed and leaves his mark one of the most successful periods for the club.

RIP Tony
