The dawn of a new season, managerless after the resignation of Chris Nicholl and looking down. Step in Jan Sorensen.
The Dane, who turned out for clubs such as Feyenoord and Ajax during his playing career, was appointed to the Saddlers helm in 1997 to try and take the club foward in the then Division Two (League One).
He signed players such as the experienced French duo Jeff Peron and Roger Boli, who did prove to be a big hit and the only reason why the Saddlers survived relegation that season.
COnsequently, Jan was sacked in May 1998 after a 1-0 home defeat to Wycombe, with Bonser deeming the appointment as a 'risk that failed.'
In the mean time, Jan used his newly found footballing prowess to get a sporting director role at Hvidovre IF in 2000, where he lasted a matter of months.
Jan found himself out of football, after a failed managerial career, where the only remarkable achievement was a trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United.
The 54-year-old is now said to have bought a pub in Tamworth, where he and his partner have settled and runa successful business.
Jan Sorensen was the turning point in Walsall's fortunes, as he brought in players that will be remembered for decades in Peron and Boli, as well as giving the Saddlers much needed funds through long cup runs.
After his departure, it eventually led to the appointment of Ray Graydon, who started on of the most successful decades in the club's history.
